Food trucks are certainly gaining popularity nationally for events. It is hard to believe locally that the Portland area has upwards of 1000 trucks and carts in pods, in parking lots, mobile touring, suburban locations and just about everywhere. One might think the trend even started here!
Let’s dive into the reasons folks choose food trucks for events these days. Well it’s trendy! Multiple trucks can offer dining choices; it could save planners money (not always true); it creates a different vibe and well it speaks what we locally know- some great meals can come out of trucks.
Here are a few thoughts to ponder before making the plunge into hiring food trucks for your event:
- Does the vendor have the throughput capabilities for your group size? (meaning the time it will take to feed all your guests).
- Will your guests be waiting in the weather?
- How are beverages going to be handled (specifically alcohol)?
- Who cleans up the trash?
- Where will your guests enjoy their meal? Do you need rental equipment like tables, chairs or linens?
- Are there guaranteed minimums that are required?
- What happens to food that is paid for but not eaten?
- How will you gauge the popularity of the choices (and not be embarrassed by running out?)
- Are you OK with the presentation of the products? Food Carts & Trucks commonly used a variety of service ware options such as food trays, paper plates, wrappers, plastic clamshells, etc…?
- Are you concerned of the environmental impact of the above service items?
- Does your venue allow food trucks?
